Young full-back Ezekiel Fryers has joined Spurs from Standard Liège.
The 20-year old defender was close to joining Spurs last Summer, but Spurs and Fryer’s former club Manchester United couldn’t agree a compensation fee in front of an FA tribunal.
After his move to Spurs collapsed Fryers moved to Belgian outfit Standard Liège. In August 2012 he signed a 2-year contract with the Jupiler Pro League club. Fryers made 8 appearances for Standard this season.
Standard has issued the following statement on its official website:
Zeki fryers returns to the Premier League
Standard Liège, Tottenham Hotspur and Ezekiel Fryers have agreed a deal for the permanent transfer [of the player.]
Today the young English defender (20) signed his new contract with the London club Tottenham Hotspur.
Ezekiel arrived at Standard during the Summer transfer window. He made 7 league appearances for our club which helped to convince Tottenham, who were tracking him for many months.
Our young defender, who plays a position where competition is fierce, struggled to adapt to life away from home and his family. When the London club registered an interest in Fryers it became clear to Standard that it was best for all parties to conclude a deal swiftly to grant the player a return to England.
Standard Liège would like to thank ‘Zeki’ for his good performances for the club and wishes him all the best on his new challenge.
Fryers has featured in England’s Under-16, Under-17 and Under-19 teams.
Tottenham Hotspur have announced he will join the club’s Development Squad for the time being.
