Tottenham Hotspur have entered talks with Ajax for the transfer of Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen.
Ajax technical director Marc Overmars confirmed the negotiations with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy this evening in front of the camera of Telegraaf TV.
Telegraaf TV reporter (TR): Marc. Is is true you negotiated with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy about the transfer of Christian Eriksen today?
Marc Overmars (MO): Yes, that’s correct.
TR: It’s rumoured you have reached an agreement on the transfer fee for Eriksen. Can you confirm this?
MO: No, I can’t confirm that.
TR: Why? Do you have to wait for Spurs to confirm the deal?
MO: It’s done once the signature is on the dotted line. We’re not at that stage yet.
TR: But the negotiations are very close?
MO: Well, Christian has opened talks with Spurs.
TR: Can you describe how Ajax will miss Eriksen?
MO: If it happens, we obviously won’t be happy with his departure. Especially since we, the trainers and staff, feel that he was improving and was becoming more influential in games this season. We would’ve liked to see him stay at Ajax for another season.
TR: His contract was running out. So selling him now would be the obvious choice Ajax usually makes when a player’s contract is running out?
MO: The length of the contract is very important and previously made agreements also play a role.
Jaap de Groot, chief sport editor at Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf , talked about the negotiations on TV show Fox Sport Centraal :
“On behalf of the Ajax board, Michael Kinsbergen and Marc Overmars have conducted negotiations with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy. The negotiations, which took place this afternoon at the Amsterdam ArenA, spanned several hours. It is pretty clear that the clubs are close to an agreement. Spurs have improved their initial offer of €8 million to an offer in excess of €10 million. It is expected that the transfer will be concluded shortly.”
