Rafael van der Vaart’s time at Spurs came to an end on Friday after Tottenham agreed a deal with HSV for the Dutch midfielder.

Van der Vaart became a fans’ favourite at White Hart Lane after his deadline day arrival on 31 August 2010. Before joining Tottenham Hotspur he played for Ajax, Real Madrid and also had a previous stint at HSV Hamburg.

The Dutchman proved to be a talisman for Spurs by scoring equally beautiful and vital goals during his 2 seasons at Tottenham. He scored 28 goals in 77 appreances for Spurs.

It appears that personal reasons have played a significant role in Van der Vaart’s decision to return to Germany. His wife, Sylvie van der Vaart, has a successful career in German television and it appears that the couple preferred to relocate back to Germany in order to have a more settled family life.

Sylvie tweeted it was “time to go home”:

Van der Vaart expressed his desire to stay at Spurs after being linked with a return to the German Bundesliga. Both Schalke 04 and HSV expressed an intererest in the 29-year old Dutch international, but both deemed his signing too expensive.

HSV eventually came back in during the final days of the window and managed to agree a deal involving a  fee of around £10m.

Van der Vaart later on confirmed his move to HSV and thanked the Spurs fans via his Twitter account:
