After our redesign late last year it still felt like something was missing. Something that sets us apart from the numerous Spurs blogs on the web. We proudly present our new logo.
We decided it was time for something new, something fresh. We felt it was time for a brand new logo. We teamed up with young Canadian design enthusiast Chris Walters. He caught our attention on Twitter with his great abstract player profile artwork. After seeing his artwork, we felt he was exactly the right guy for the job. And he didn’t disappoint!
We really like Chris’ take on the classic Spurs cockerel. It’s modern, futuristic, yet stays true to the very essence of Tottenham Hotspur. You will see the new logo at the top of our website’s pages and across our various social media profiles.
We caught up with Chris to talk about his work as a designer, his love for Spurs and how our new logo came about.
Hi Chris. How long have you been a graphic designer?
I’ve always been interested in the graphical side of sports, and I’ve been designing personal logos for a few years now. I’m not sure I’d call myself a graphic designer, as I only do it as a hobby. I just enjoy it.
Could you show us some things you’ve designed in the past?
I’ve done some designs for a fantasy ice hockey forum, called The Breakaway. This was for a fantasy hockey team called the London Empire, it’s one of the newest logo’s I’ve made. It’s one of my favourites. Another hockey logo, this time for a team named the Milwaukee Wendigos. A Wendigo is a mythical creature, and to be honest quite a creepy one. Basically people believed you’d turn into this creature if you ever ate human flesh. I didn’t pick the team name by the way, haha.
And yet another hockey logo (I’m Canadian, what can I say!). This time for a team named the Alaska Lynx. With this one you can actually see the progression I went with from one season to another.
How would you describe your style in terms of graphic design?
I would say I prefer a simplistic or minimalistic approach to design. A less is more kind of thing. It’s why I love the Spurs logo so much, it’s unique and simple. Exactly what a logo should be to me.
Which graphic designers inspire you?
I’ve never really followed any individual designers, in fact I couldn’t tell you who made any of the sport logos out there. One guy I do recommend people checking out, however, is Fraser Davidson. I wish I was just one tenth as good as that guy.
What inspired you for the new logo design for Total Tottenham?
I was designing a bunch of sketches, of a cockerel at a 3/4 angle, and couldn’t get anything I liked. There really isn’t much you can do to alter the Spurs logo. In a way, it’s unique. So I decided to try and go in that abstract look. There’s a lot of triangular shapes so I figured it could work, and I think it did. Once I got the idea, I was able to design the logo in a half an hour. The longest part of the process is trying to come up with an idea.
I think many people have seen your great abstract designs based on player profile photos. How did you come up with the idea to start creating these?
To be honest, I’m not sure where the idea came from. I just decided to make a few Spurs players one day, haha. And it sort of took off from there. Within a couple of days posting a few I gained almost 200 followers on Twitter, so I started taking requests. I even had a couple MLS players contact me and ask for some, pretty cool.
How did you come into contact with football?
I’ve always been a big sports guy, and as a hockey fan I always looked down at football players like the stereotypical Canadian/American. I never gave it a shot. I decided to watch the Man United v Man City game at the end of last season, and got the bug. So I watched a few games, and then that Man City game at the end of the season turned me into a fan for good. I can’t get enough of the sport now. If a football game is televised here, I’ll watch it.
Most people in North America seem to support one of the ‘Sky 4’ teams (Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal) What made you start to support Spurs? What attracted you to the club? Any specific game or moment that got you hooked?
Well since I decided to become a football fan, I had to choose a team. I contemplated choosing Man City, since they were the team that got me interested, but I didn’t want to be a bandwagon jumper. And it’s no fun cheering for a perennial contender like United. I know a lot of Arsenal fans, so to piss them off I decided to pick Tottenham as my team. Little did I know I’d actually fall in love with them like I have. I can’t really pin point a certain moment I was hooked, probably when I watched some Gareth Bale highlight videos on YouTube. The guy just oozed skill and class.
So who is your favourite Spurs player?
I’d like to sit here and pick someone other than Gareth Bale. But it’s him. I have his jersey, he’s our best and most exciting player, and probably the player that impressed me the most when I was still on the fence. Vertonghen and Lloris are up there as well. And I don’t know why, but I have a soft spot for Sigurdsson. I wish he’d get more playing time, and was so happy he finally got a goal last game.
We’d like to thank Chris for his excellent job on our new logo.
